The King is shown en face, down to his waist, in Polish dress with a fur cap adorned with a jewel at the front and aigrette on the side. The żupan, over which he wears a fur–lined delia is held together with a decorative pin. Beneath the delia, the sash of the Order of the White Eagle and star of the Order on chest. In his left hand he holds the hilt of a karabela (Polish sabre) which is decorated in the oriental manner. The portrait is framed in an oval against the background of a rectangle placed on a pedestal. The royal orb and sceptre and a laurel and palm branch under the oval. On the pedestal, separated by the coat of arms of Poland and the Ciołek coat of arms of the Poniatowski family, is the inscription: STANISLAUS AUGUSTUS/ D.G. REX Polonia LITH. M. D. etc. etc./ Natus die 17 Jan. 1731 Elect. Die 7. Sept Coron die 25. Nov./ 1764 Warsov. The King’s features on this unique impression are not reminiscent of the ruling monarch, and his dress belongs to another period; at least one hundred years earlier. The engraver, who had to make a portrait of Stanisław August immediately after his coronation, probably had insufficient iconographic materials, so he created a portrait which differed from all other known likenesses of the monarch. Signed: unsigned. Bibiography Widacka 1994, pp. 93–100. Widacka 2008, pp. 174–5, item 76.
