Bust of Stanisław Małachowski

Le Brun, André (1737-1811) (sculptor)
ZKW/3391
The depiction of Stanisław Małachowski in scale armour adorned with a Gorgon’s mask (?) at the front; with hair shaved high up on temples, was part of the Royal Castle’s historic collections. Alongside the sculptures of Chronos and Fame, as well as a series of bronze busts of famous Polish personages and the painted decoration, it constitutes the iconographic scheme for the Knights’ Hall which was furnished in the years 1781–6 and was intended to commemorate distinguished individuals as well as glorious events in Polish history. The sculpture is one of 18 smaller busts that were placed in the Knights’ Hall. Inscribed Małachowski on front, under the bust. Inscribed STA. MAŁACHOWSKI / + MDCXCIX. in gold letters on front of base. Stanisław Małachowski of the Nałęcz coat of arms (c. 1659–99). Son of Franciszek, Castellan of Sieradz and Barbara née Grabska. Voivode of Kalisz from 1692, Voivode of Poznań from 1698. He negotiated with Turkey before signing the Treaty of Karlowitz.
