One of a series of 22 portraits of Polish kings commissioned for the Marble Room at the Royal Castle in Warsaw. The painting is listed in the 1795 catalogue of the Stanisław August collection under no. 1159. Władysław I the Short (1260 or 1261–1333), Duke of the Piast dynasty (reg. 1306–33), crowned King of Poland in 1320. Inscribed on the back VLADISLAUS/ Cognomentô LOCTICUS/ seu Cubitalis, propter formae=/m exiquitate. Casimiri/ Principis Cujaviae Filius,/ LESCI Nigri Frater./ Coronatus in Regem/ Poloniae, Annô 1320./ Obijt Cracoviae, Ao 1333/ Regni sui Ao 13./ Nro. Inscription: VLADISLAS LOCTICUS/ + MCCCXXXIII. The marble plaque beneath the painting is inscribed: VLADISLAS LOCTICUS/ + MCCCXXXIII.
