One of a series of 22 portraits of Polish kings commissioned for the Marble Room at the Royal Castle in Warsaw. The painting is listed in the 1795 catalogue of the Stanisław August collection under no. 1161. Louis I (1326–82) of the first House of Anjou, King of Hungary (reg. 1342–82) (Louis I the Great), King of Poland (reg. 1370–82) as Ludwik I the Hungarian. Inscribed on the back: LODOVICUS/ HUNGARUS/ Casimiri Magni Gener,/ REX Poloniae et Hungariae/ Natus 5. Martij Ao 1326./ coepit regnare in Polonia/ d: 8. Aug: Coronatus/ d: 17. Novemb: Ao 1370/ Obijt Tyrnaviae 3. Aug. 1382./ AEtatis suae 56. Regni vero/ in Polonia Ao 12./ Nro 5. The marble plaque beneath the painting is inscribed: LUDOVICUS HUNGARUS/ + MCCCLXXXII.
