One of a series of 22 portraits of Polish kings commissioned for the Marble Room at the Royal Castle in Warsaw. The painting is listed in the 1795 catalogue of the Stanisław August collection under no. 1170. Henri (1551–9) of the Valois dynasty, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania (reg. 1573–4) as Henryk I Walezy, King of France (reg. 1574–89) as Henri III. He was the first elected monarch of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Red number 1170 of Stanisław August collection bottom left. Inscribed on the back: Nro 14/ HENRICUS VALESIUS/ Henrici II. Galliae Regis/ Filius Tertius. Natus 21. 7bris./ Ao 1551. Electus in Regem Poloniae/ d. 12 Maij. 1573. Coronatus 21. Febr./ Ao 1574. Deseruit Polonaei Regnum/ d: 18 Junij. Ao 1574.
