In the catalogues of the Stanisław August collection the painting is unnumbered; in the 1795 catalogue it is listed as: “Portrait sde Stanislas Hosius". Stanisław Hozjusz (1504–79), Bishop of Warmia 1551, Cardinal 1561, Polish envoy to the Vatican 1569, writer and poet. Bacciarelli pinxit 1782 [Stanisław Hosius, Cardinal and Bishop of Warmia. Born in Kraków on 5 May in the year 1504, to Ulryk, the Burgrave of Vilnius, and his wife Anna. Recommended to the Court of King Zygmunt II August by Tomicki and Maciejowski, Bishops of Kraków, for whom had served as secretary. Envoy to Germany and Italy. Transferred from the Bishopric of Chełmno to that of Warmia, where through his sagacity he maintained the country, i.e. Prussia, in peace in spite of heretics spreading their teachings. Elevated to Cardinal, was in charge of the Polish delegation to the Council of Trent. Basked in glory and merits, died at Capranica near Rome in 1579 on 5th August, at the age of 76.
