One of ten portraits of illustrious personages of Poland installed as overdoors in the Knights’ Hall at the Royal Castle in Warsaw. In the catalogues of the Stanisław August collection the painting is unnumbered; in the 1795 catalogue it is listed as: “Portrait de And. Olszowski". Andrzej Olszowski (1621–77), Bishop of Chełmno 1661, Vice-Chancellor of the Crown 1666, Archbishop of Gniezno and Primate 1677. Inscribed on the back: Andrzej Olszowski Prymas/ Syn Waleryana Kaszte: Spicimirs: i Zofii Duninow=/ny. Młodsze lata przepędziwszy na Naukach we Wło=/szech po różnych pomnieyszych Stopniach wyniesiony od/ Jana Kazimierza na Biskupstwo Chełminskie i Podkanc=/lerstwo Koronne. Sprawował oba urzędy ze Sławą nauki/ rostropnosci i statku. Pomógł do zaspokoienia konfederacyi/ Żołnierskiey Litewskiey. Wysłany do Frankfortu na Seym/ Niemiecki podczas Elekcyi Leopolda, wyiednał wyiscie woisk/ niemieckich z Polski. Wydaną Kżką Censura candidatorum/ wiele do Elekcyi Michała Króla pomógł, którego też oże/nienie z Eleonorą Austryaczką sprawił. Niemniey dopo=/mógł Królowi Janowi do Korony od Którego potym na/ stopniu Prymasa wyniesionym został. umarł R 1677/ dnia 29 Sierpnia w Gdańsku. Bacciarelli Pinxit 1782 [The Primate Andrzej Olszowski, son of Waleryan, Castellan of Spicymirz, and Zofia Dunin. Spent his early years studying in Italy. After occupying minor posts, elevated by Jan II Kazimierz to the Bishopric of Chełmno and Deputy Chancellorship of the Crown. He discharged both his duties with wisdom and judiciousness. He helped meet the demands of the soldiers’ confederacy in Lithuania. Sent to Frankfurst as the delegate of the German Diet during the election of Leopold, he achieved the withdrawal of German troops from Poland. By publishing the book Censura candidatorum he contributed to the election of King Michael and to his subsequent marriage to Eleanor of Austria. He also helped King Jan in his election to the Crown, for which he was made the Primate. Died in 1667, on 2 August, in Gdańsk.
