One of six paintings of subjects from Polish history commissioned for the Knights’ Hall at the Royal Castle in Warsaw. In the catalogues of the Stanisław August collection the painting is unnumbered; in the catalogue of 1795 it is listed as: “Casimir le Grand recevant les suppliques des paysans et ordonnant la réparation des villes". The inscription on the plaque above the painting reads: LEGES CASIMIRI MAGNI. A. MCCCXLVII
