The white mihrab field with a sophisticated top layout, with a trefoil in a key, densely filled with stalks growing out of the vase located on the lower edge and two pairs of trees of slender intertwined trunks flanking it. The spandrels brown with blue corners, filled with ornament. Border a-b-a-X-a-b-c-d. In the main stripe on a purple background, an extended tendril with palmettes. The side stripes composed of three (inner) and four bands (outer): the a stripe: with a floral tendril on a light green background; the b stripe, slightly wider than the others, blue with a floral tendril; the c stripe: decorated with a red-and-yellow band of overlapping motifs V; the d stripe: smooth purple. Colours: white, purple, light brown, blue, pink, green, light green, grey, orange, black, yellowish green. The rug was woven in a weaving centre whose status was affirmed in the Safavid era, famed for its silken products, where multiple new workshops were set up in the late 19th c. and made e.g. prayer rugs. The decoration of the rug at hand references clearly the classic, curvedline patterns, e.g. in the sophisticated, naturalist rendition of the motif of trees (see a 16th-century rug with “tigers" from the Museo Poldi Pezzoli, Milan). Most of the prayer rugs made in the Kashan workshops in the 19th c. and 20th c. show more geometric decorative motifs.
